Copenhagen is one of the most bike-friendly cities on this planet. One reason why we love the Danish capital, and surely one of many arguments that made it win Monocle’s ‘Most Liveable City’ survey earlier this year. Another thing the Danish capital and Denmark in general is great at is innovation. Designers from the small Nordic country consistently come up with genius design ideas to make all our lives better and more beautiful.
Enter: The Copenhagen Wheel. Originally developed at MIT with a sponsorship by the Mayor of Copenhagen, it combines both the Danish love for biking and their eye for design.
The wheel is being put in production by Superpedestrian and makes biking a bit more fast, safe and fun. A feature called “Power Assist” measures your pedal pushing efforts and kicks in with a boost just at the right time, helping you conquer steep streets or long stretches of road. The battery is recharged when you brake, and a nifty little phone App lets you measure stats and control the system. And did we mention it looks gorgeous?
